ALBUM THOUGHTS: The Dream - Love Me All Summer Hate Me All Winter

So this is the guy who's responsible for writing Rihanna's "Umbrella," which I hate, and J. Holiday's "Bed," which I love. So, bassed on my mixed feelings about this guy, I had to check out his album, released on December 11th. What do I think of it? Well...not much.

From what I've been reading elsewhere, everyone seems to be feelin' it. But I don't think it's all that great. The album definitely isn't horrible, it just lacks soul which for me is disappointing. Most of the tracks bore me, so I'll only comment on the ones that caught my attention in some way. I'll go in chronological order.

Starting with the fifth track, "She Needs My Love." The first thing that grabbed my attention about this one was the beat. As the song progressed I found myself liking the chorus and learning the words rather easily. IMO, the lyrics aren't anything too special, and I hate the rap-ish part. I do, however, like the idea of a man being confident in how his woman feels about him, knowing those other guys dont' have a chance and loving it.

Track 6, "Falsetto" is one with a cool beat, and the tune is hot. It's catchy. The lyrics aren't wworth commenting on...

Track 8, "Purple Kisses," is one I do, for the most part, enjoy. I like how he can't get enough of her kisses. And I especially like the part when he talks about her knocking at the door and he's trying to gain some self-control to keep her from knowing she's winning...lol. That puts a grin on my face.

Track 11, "Livin' a Lie," features Rihanna and is definitely growing on me. As far as lyrics go, I can definitely understand that feeling. The song is pretty damn catchy with a pretty cool beat to go with it. This just might be my fav track on the album...After listening to it a few times, it definitely is. I think I officially love it now!

The last track that caught my attention ironically happens to be the final track on the album lol. Track 12, "Mama," sounds like it actually had potential. Unfortunately, the effects ruined it for me. It's too bad, because I had really high hopes for this one. I think the lyrics are sad, and it sounded like he was singing with emotion, but I can only tell so much from the effect induced headache...

And here's something totally random and pointless. The songs I want to like but just can't get into are, "Love Songs" as I love the beat, and "Playin' In Her Hair" cuz the chorus is cool.

So, if you like songs with hot beats, catchy tunes, and don't mind disposable lyrics, then you'll probably enjoy this album. The production is definitely good, I just find the lyrics are a bit too agressive for my liking. But that's just me. To me, RnB isn't about hot beats and crap lyrics, it's about pouring out your soul, and telling a story that actually means something... A few emotionless songs here and there is fine, but an album which consists of 90% crap just doesn't cut it for me. And Although I will probably continue to listen to four out of the five songs I commented on, this isn't an album that I would rush out to get.

Anyway, that's just my opinion. Check him out and see what you think for yourself.

Until next time...
